  • SSA Summer Series - June 28, 2015
    WINNER'S WRITE-UP, Chris Gaffney

8 boat fleet with several new boats out there either for the first time or still on their first handful of regattas in the fleet.  Great to see the new blood out there and great to see an 8 boat fleet on a weekend where the forecast wasn't great and several of our usual suspects were unable to make it for various reasons.  On that note, thanks to everyone for coming out and thanks to SSA for their hospitality.
4 races were sailed in extremely stable (for the Chesapeake at this time of year) 6-15 knot westerly breezes.  Partly sunny skies and cool weather were a welcome sight.  Winds were oscillating, almost like clockwork, and mainly between 8-12 kts with some stronger gusts and some lighter phases.  The starting line was a bit long for the size of the fleet which allowed ample opportunity for everyone to get off the line and see where their boat speed matched up with everyone else.  The premium was all on getting off the line with speed and clear air, I doubt we saw anyone actually start within a boat length of the line at the gun all day.  Baseline compass headings for the day were ~315 on port tack and ~235 on starboard.  These numbers held pretty true throughout the day and gave a pretty definitive guide as to what tack to be on and when to be looking to get on the other board.  The key to the day was to sail fast, stay in phase and avoid digging in for the flyer at all costs.  Getting out of phase with the shifts meant losing a lot of ground.
933 managed to win all 4 races, leading at every mark until the final race of the day, which was paced by Chris Junge and crew on 949 all the way around the track until the final 50 yards of a 5 legger to close out the day that turned into an epic grind it out grudge match between the two EYC skippers.  Chris Wilson and team on 1078 started out strong with two 2nds in the first two races and may have been the fastest boat on the water all day long, but found themselves falling out of phase with the shifts in races 3 and 4.  Corner of Sanity and Madness (949) ended the day in 2nd, followed by Lil' Puffy (1078) in third.  I'm sorry, I would include the order of the other finishers, but I can't seem to find the scores online.
Thanks again to everyone for coming out, happy Independence Day and look forward to seeing you out on the water again soon!
